05:48 – 07:00
The first block
Five tee times, every morning, reserved for Dawn Patrol alone. Book by nine the night before; whatever goes unclaimed releases to the sheet at dawn. In four years, almost nothing has.
05:12 — BEFORE LIGHT
Cielo Vista Golf Club · Alto Mesa, New Mexico · 5,930 ft
Dawn Patrol is a membership within the membership: the first hour of light, the first five tee times, and a golf course that hasn't heard a voice yet.
01 05:48 — First light
At 5:48 the mesa rim goes rose before anything else does. The fairways are still holding last night's indigo, the creek runs almost silent, and the only footprints on the property belong to the crew who cut new holes an hour ago.
Seventy-one minutes of this. Then the sun clears the rim, the carts wake up, and the ordinary day begins. Dawn Patrol exists for the seventy-one minutes.
Air 58° · wind calm · one canyon wren02 06:15 — The dew line
Nobody has hit this fairway today. Your drive draws the first line through the dew — a dark comet tail you can read from a hundred yards, exactly where you hit it and exactly how far.
Old golfers called it dew-sweeping. We call it proof: for one hour, every yard of this course answers to you alone.
Hole 14 · par 4 · 388 yards · creek at 26503 06:40 — The putting surface
Greens are mowed at five and rolled by half past. What you putt on at 6:40 is the smoothest surface this course will offer all day — no spike marks, no repaired pitch marks, no traffic.
Just the line, light coming in low enough to show you every break, and your ball hissing through the dew.

Not a tee time. A standing claim on the best seventy-one minutes this property produces, every day it produces them.

Piñon-roast coffee on the first tee, poured before you ask. The day's pin sheet, hand-marked by the superintendent. Green-chile burritos on Saturdays, while they last. They never last.
Posted daily
Every score in before 7:00 goes up on the board in the grill room — a season-long order of merit for people who finished golfing before your alarm went off. The only prize is the fact of it. It is enough.
Places pass by waitlist, not by purchase. Current members of Cielo Vista may request one below; the head professional calls you back the same day, usually before noon, occasionally from the fourth tee.

You'll be making the turn by then — second coffee, front nine already in the book, dew line long since burned away. The rest of the field will never know it was there.
